Bell & Sons was founded in 1957 by Carl and Helen Bell as a distributor of Franklin dry roasted peanuts to bars and party stores in the Metro Detroit Area. The first warehouse was a corner of their garage on Royal Grand between Five and Six Mile Roads in Redford Township.
Carl and Helen found they needed more space due to their expanding product lines (approximately 500 items), so in 1969 they borrowed money for a down payment from a relative and purchased a 2000 sq. ft. building at 12083 Woodbine in Redford near Telegraph and Plymouth Roads.
In 1979 Carl and Helen retired and Bell & Sons continued to expand under the ownership of their son, Thomas and his wife, Christine. Steady growth was reflected in a 1300 sq. ft. addition to the Woodbine building in 1980, Gregory Bell (grandson) in sales in 1982, and additional trucks and office staff in 1987.
In 1988 we moved to a new 8800 sq. ft. location at 26514 W. Seven Mile Road with computerization in 1989 and steady increases in sales, office and warehouse/delivery staffing. Our sales qualified us to join the Unipro buying group in 1993. Laptops were introduced in 1995 for the outside sales force and 1996 presented an opportunity to purchase an adjoining 4800 sq. ft. building to help warehouse 5000 different products plus an expansion into foodservice equipment sales.
The early 2000 years saw a steady broadening of the company’s scope in foodservice equipment, customer types and support services. We expanded into the back of the house foodservice equipment and ventilation enabling us to bring a potential food operation from the drawing board to its grand opening. We can supply equipment for all commercial kitchens be it the local “watering hole”, diner, caterer, fine dining, church, school or chain units. As establishments grow we are here to aid their upgrades, remodels and expansions.
Bell & Sons has remained as committed to the replenishment of all our customers’ daily needs just as we were in the late 50’s. We are still the place for everything from “soup to nuts” – glassware, disposables, cleaning products, spices and condiments, furniture, snacks, ranges, freezers, walk-ins etc, etc, etc. If we don’t have it we will get it. We are now a third generation company and are very proud of our accomplishments!
